At its September meeting, the Russell County Industrial Development Authority board voted to donate three acres of property at the Lake Cumberland Regional Industrial Complex Site 1 for the construction of a new fire department substation.

Russell Springs Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Barnett, along with members of the Russell Springs Volunteer Fire Department, presented architectural renderings and a location map of the proposed station. Barnett said they have been “working on this project for about three years,” and that with the acquisition of the property, construction could begin in spring 2027.

The request for property at the edge of the industrial park, along French Valley Road, is strategic for serving the growing business development along U.S. 127 between Russell Springs and Jamestown. “Everything’s growing in that area,” said Russell Springs Mayor Eddie Thomas. “I feel like it would benefit the community.”

Additionally, the substation would benefit industrial development in the park while also being in close proximity to the new SEED Academy, Russell County High School, and the Russell County Business Park, home to the Bruss and Motherson manufacturing plants.

“I think this would be a good addition for our future developments in the park area,” said board chairman Clint Voils.

As part of the motion to gift the property, the board added a caveat that the donation is dependent upon receiving permission from the state highway department for access from the highway.
